Dr Syed Ahsan is a Consultant Cardiologist and Heart Rhythm Specialist at Barts Heart Centre within St Bartholomew’s Hospital. Having worked previously as a consultant at the Heart Hospital, University College London, he has moved to the Barts Heart Centre, the largest cardiac centre in Europe, following the merger of the two hospitals. Dr Ahsan is one of the leads for Atrial Fibrillation here. He is also a consultant at North Middlesex University Hospital, where his practice encompasses all aspects of adult cardiology.
Dr Ahsan graduated from Guys Kings and St Thomas’ Medical School in 2000 with a First Class Honours degree in his BSc. He undertook his cardiology specialist training at various prestigious hospitals in London, where he has worked with world-renowned experts. These include the Royal Brompton Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital, and the Heart Hospital, where he undertook his fellowship in Cardiac Electrophysiology.
His postgraduate medical doctorate was awarded from University College London and evaluated strategies to optimise outcomes in patients with cardiac rhythm devices. His research work was awarded the Royal Society of Medicine National Prize in 2009 and was presented nationally and internationally at cardiac conferences. He has been a finalist in two national young investigator awards.
In his current role, our heart specialist Dr Ahsan sees and treats many different cardiology conditions. He is a highly-experienced operator. He routinely implants all types of cardiac pacing resynchronisation and defibrillator devices. Dr Ahsan also performs ablations for arrhythmia and coronary angiography. He also sees and treats patients with blackouts, chest pains, and high blood pressure.

So we can certainly do a lot of the diagnostic tests that you may need, for example, an ultrasound scan, an ECG, a heart monitor, they can all be fitted for you normally at the same time as your appointment, or very soon after. Certain diagnostic tests that we do such as implantable loop recorder or reveal LINQ device, which is there to monitor your heart, can also be implanted in the outpatient setting now, rather than requiring you to have an admission for this procedure.

So when you come to see me, I will take a history, a full detailed history about your problem, any other conditions you may have, family history, and your lifestyle. And depending on what your condition is or what we find, we may refer you on, for further tests. These include heart tracing scans, or CT scans. So that will give us all the information we need. The initial consultation normally lasts somewhere between half an hour to 45 minutes and follow-up consultations can be a bit shorter depending on what we need to discuss. But what I do try and do is to try and answer all your questions in quite a lot of detail and hopefully provides you with information and leave the consultation feeling more informed about your condition.
